Design Development (Brush Strokes)

From my last design project I think I finally found a handwriting that works for me to express my ideas in a fun and creative way that I can then refine to real garments.

So heres some of my paint work and couple experiments on Gimp. (working drawings in sketchbook)

Japan Culture Festival: Spitalfields

Japan Matsuri took place on September 18, 2010 at Spitalfields Market.

I solely went because I love Japan, but it was cool to see how independent sellers ran stalls in England compared to back home.

For those that missed out heres a clip of the events!

LFW Internship: Basso & Brooke

I came across the amazing print-design duo in August helping them with running for the Ivete Sangalo show in New York.

I've also been helping them with the run up to fashion week with hand-stitching/ finishings and helping out at the model castings.

It was amazing seeing their work upclose being such an admirer of their work for years now.
I also understood the necessity of  simple-looking silhouettes for complex prints so the print didnt get lost in the garment. It was all fun and ingenious.
Being heavily print/textile based myself it was a great experience to work hands on with they boys and hope to be get more involved next time round!
Bring on AW11!

Initial Ideas: Print Experimentation

Mood Board into 'Escape'

I have been experimenting with my images using different proportions and effects to create print ideas that I could re-create myself screenprinting or to make as digital prints.

I have loads and loads of examples, some I want to take shapes out of and use as style lines, neck lines, garment details etc. when I am draping on the stand
.

F.A.D. Competition: Escape

"Escape from the everyday into a place of wonder and distraction.
Retreat to a physical or fictional place that holds personal meaning for you."

  • Uploading Tokyo pictures onto facebook
  • Looking at friends holiday snaps
  • And even catching glimpses of magical locations on my tumblr, got me wanting to be anywhere but back in cold, wet England!
So I used this brief as a starting point for my design work.
These are some of my initial images delving into the theme 'Escape'.

Deptford: Secondary Research

Deptford is gaining a reputation as one of the city's most creative spaces with the High Street being aclaimed as the 'New Shoreditch'.

With over a hundred galleries, a wealth of arts venues, local festivals and an international (and highly alternative and student populated) community its never dull.
(bbc.co.uk/news)

Near are 2 of Londons leading arts facilities;

Goldsmiths College, University of London

At the moment there over 300 young people from all around Lewisham who are members, and the aim is to boost this number to 3000.

Trinity Laban

The UK's 1st Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Creekside
Being ranked in the top 5 by Guardian Higher Education/University League tables in each of their specialist disciplines of music and dance.

I chose to hone in on students and art ethusiasts because of their strong presence in Deptford.

Design wise I believe they respect innovativity and bringing something new to an area.
Being a student myself also benefits the way I would think about setting up a small business towards this target market. Communicating with other art lovers I believe my business venture would have better prospects of doing well.
